Structural Classes 1 to 4: Classifying Your Build
Understand the difference between structural classes 1, 2, 3 and 4 in BR18, what drives classification, and when a build requires a certified structural engineer.
The structural class is one of those decisions that looks harmless in an early sketch meeting, but that moves project economics more than almost any other technical choice. It determines how much structural documentation the load-bearing system requires, how thorough the internal checking must be, and — not least — whether an independent, certified party has to sign off on the project. Assume too low, and the municipality can demand documentation you never budgeted for. Assume too high, and you pay for a level of checking the build does not need.
The key point is that the structural class in BR18 (the Danish Building Regulations) is not a free choice. It follows from the building’s consequence class — that is, how serious the consequences would be if the structure failed. The greater the consequences of a failure, the higher the class, and the more independent checking the regulations require. Grasp that logic early, and you can classify the build already in the brief phase and size both the budget and the consultant team accordingly.
What the BR18 structural class actually governs
The structural class is the regulations’ way of scaling the level of documentation and checking on the load-bearing structures according to how much is at stake. It forms part of the technical documentation you must be able to present to the municipality as the building authority, and it is closely tied to the building’s placement in a consequence class.
The thinking is proportionality. A small, simple build, where a structural failure would have limited consequences, should not go through the same heavy checking machinery as a large, complex build with many people and high values at stake. The four classes: KK1, KK2, KK3 and KK4
The four structural classes — known in everyday use as KK1, KK2, KK3 and KK4 — represent a rising requirement for documentation and checking. They should be understood as a spectrum running from the simple and low-consequence to the complex and high-consequence.
KK1 — simple structures, low consequence
KK1 covers the simple builds with limited structural complexity and low consequences in the event of failure. Here the requirements for structural documentation are lightest, and the build can typically be handled without independent checking by a certified structural engineer. Think of small, manageable structures with familiar spans and loads.
KK2 and KK3 — the great majority of ordinary construction
Most ordinary builds — residential construction, smaller commercial schemes, multi-storey buildings at a manageable scale — land in KK2 or KK3. Here the requirements for the structural documentation rise, and from a certain level the requirement kicks in for a certified structural engineer to take part in the project and check the structural documentation. The boundary between the classes turns on complexity, spans, load types and the consequences of failure.
KK4 — complex structures, high consequence
KK4 is reserved for the most complex structures with the greatest consequences in the event of failure — large, atypical or load-bearing systems where a failure would have serious consequences. Here the requirement for independent checking is the greatest, and the documentation burden correspondingly heavy.
Rule of thumb: the greater the consequence of a failure, and the more the structure departs from the familiar and well-proven, the higher the structural class — and the more independent checking the regulations require.
Because the precise boundaries between the classes depend on the nature of the structure, the size of the build and its use, the specific classification should always be verified against the current guidance to the Building Regulations and agreed with a certified structural engineer before you lock down the budget.
What determines the classification
The classification is not made on the basis of a single figure, but on an overall assessment in which several factors come into play:
- The consequence class — how serious the consequences would be in the event of a structural failure, both for people, the environment and economic values. This is the load-bearing principle behind the entire system.
- The complexity of the structure — whether you are dealing with familiar, well-proven solutions or atypical systems with unusual spans, interacting effects or complicated load paths.
- Use and occupancy — how many people are present in the building, and how difficult it would be to evacuate in the event of failure.
- The size and height of the build — which typically correlate with both complexity and consequence.
What matters is that the assessment is made early and documented. The placement in a structural class is part of the documentation the municipality can demand, and it governs the entire design process. Get the class wrong late in the process, and it can mean redesign, fresh documentation and delay.
When a certified structural engineer is required
This is where the cost consequence becomes concrete. For the higher structural classes, BR18 requires that a certified structural engineer take part in the build and carry out independent checking of the structural documentation. The certified structural engineer is a professional whose competence is formally certified, and whose role is to give the project the external, independent sign-off that the regulations require at higher consequence.
For KK1 you can typically do without the certified structural engineer, while the need and the requirement rise through the classes. How to avoid the costly wrong assumption
The most common and most expensive mistake is to set the structural class too low in the early phase, because the budget looks nicer — and then discover later that the build really belongs in a higher class with requirements for independent checking and heavier documentation. The opposite, over-dimensioning the level of checking, also costs money, but is less of a professional risk.
A few practical moves:
- Classify in the brief phase. Settle the consequence and structural class before the sketches are locked, so the budget reflects the real level of documentation and checking.
- Think structure and fire together. The two class systems are linked and affect both the consultant team and the documentation. Handle them in parallel, not in series.
- Bring the certified structural engineer in early if the build is moving up through the classes. It is cheaper to get the classification right from the start than to redesign.
- Document the assumptions. The municipality can demand to see the basis for the classification — have it in writing.
